In general, to be awarded a scholarship, you first need to show that you are eligible. Some scholarship providers might have separate requirements such as your financial situation, your academic background, interest in the subject, etc. It may be best to contact them directly.

Most universities in the UK that offer masters degrees will require you to possess an undergraduate degree before you can be admitted to their masters programme directly. However, you can enrol into a top-up degree and gain a BSc within a year, or you could apply for a Postgraduate diploma initially and transfer into a masters programme. Please read our article about the process from HND to Masters degree.

You may be initially enrolled for an MPhil in the first stage of a PhD programme. You’ll then ‘upgrade’ to PhD registration, usually after one year, once your research has progressed. In some universities, you may be asked to pass a viva before proceeding to PhD. Enrolling for an Mphil/Phd is perfectly normal in the UK. Most PhD programmes have the Mphil element at the beginning of the PhD programme but you can study MPhil on its own although it is uncommon.

You can read more about the difference between MPhil and PhD.
